How a commission works

Consultation

We sit down — in the showroom or over a call — and talk about the piece, who it is for and what it needs to live up to. Bring photographs, an old piece you would like remade, or nothing at all. We will tell you honestly what a budget can carry in stones and metal before anything is promised.

Concept

We come back with two or three directions rather than one fixed answer: setting styles, stone shapes, proportions. This is the stage to say what you dislike. Nothing has been ordered and nothing is committed.

Design

The chosen direction is drawn up properly and the stones are selected. You see the diamonds or coloured stones yourself, loose and under a loupe, with their certification in front of you, before any of them are bought.

CAD and approval

The agreed design is modelled in 3D so you can judge height, proportion and how it sits against a wedding band or on the neck. Revisions happen here, on screen, where they cost nothing. Work only begins once you approve the model in writing.

Craftsmanship

Casting, hand-setting and assembly by the Hatton Garden workshops we have worked with over a decade of trading, a few doors from our counter. We check the piece in progress rather than seeing it for the first time when it is finished.

Finishing

Polishing, the finish you chose, hallmarking at the London Assay Office where required, and a final inspection by us against the approved design before you are asked to come in.

Delivery

Handed over in person at the showroom with any certification and valuation paperwork, or sent fully insured. We talk you through cleaning, insurance and when to bring it back to be checked.

Previous commissions

We are photographing recent commissions and will publish them here as the owners allow. Bespoke work is private by nature, so we would rather show you nothing than show you someone else's pieces. Come into the showroom and we will show you what we have made and put you in front of the stones.

What to expect

Timeframes

A commission takes as long as the design and the stones require. Once we understand what you want, we will give you a realistic date in writing — and tell you early if a deadline is not achievable rather than rushing the setting.

Deposits and payment

A deposit is taken before stones are bought and work begins, with the balance due on completion. The exact terms are confirmed in your written quotation before you commit to anything.

Nothing is made until you approve it

You see the design, the CAD model and the stones before the piece exists. No work starts on an unapproved design, and the quotation is fixed before the workshop is instructed.

Your own stones and old pieces

We are happy to reset stones you already own or remodel inherited jewellery, and we will tell you plainly where a stone is not suitable rather than setting it and hoping.
